Pergi Korea Selatan memang best. Tempat dia cantik.

Aku menginap di hotel kawasan bandar dan sepanjang 4 hari aku disana, aku tak pernah terjumpa pun seorang wanita Korea yang berpakaian tradisional. Sumpah tak ada.

Rata-rata, remaja perempuan berpakaian moden, berbaju t, berseluar pendek atau berskirt pendek paras peha. Yang pertengahan umur atau yang bekerja memang berpakaian anggun. Pakai kot dan seluar panjang atau skirt paras lutut, atau blouse. Pendek kata, semuanya designer's brand, Donna Karan, Armani, etc. Beg tangan popular adalah Coach atau LV. Bagi makcik-makcik pula, blouse dan seluar besar. Kasut tinggi memang tak lekang.

Tapi walaupun moden, berpakaian jenama dari Amerika, mereka tidak berbahasa orang putih pun. Aku dah test lebih dari 10 kali, memang sah tak boleh.

Tapi kalau pergi Itaewon tempat yang ramai pelancong, ayat yang mereka tahu adalah thank you. Adalah dua tiga orang yang boleh sebut harga dalam bahasa inggeris.

Itu di Itaewon sahaja.

La vita è bella

I just got to watch La vita è bella for the first time. It's a beautiful movie. The movie is about a father, Guido, keeping his son alive during the German occupation in Italy. Guido tries his best to keep his son from hunger, from being killed and most importantly to survive the life in concentration camp. He told his son that it was a game and they collect points when they do something; even little things like hiding or keeping quiet.

I wept when he was murdered after being caught by the Nazi, trying to find his wife. And wept again when his son boarded the victory tank and found his mother at last.

They won the first place. Beautiful!

Son: Girls who brought their water bottle, tend to lost the bottle at the canteen. And most of them didn't get it back. So, in this case, boys are cleverer. We (referring to his friends and himself) made a wise choice to leave our bottles in the class.

Picture book vs purse

I remember having a group discussion about the price of my picture book and other books by the same publisher which are at RM33.90 with somebody who has a significant role in the book industry. He seemed to raise his eyebrows and rolled his eyes upon hearing about the price. He seemed very very surprised. It was written all over his face. This was noticed not only by me but few other friends who were there. He finally said, "Oh, RM33.90? Cannot go lower?"

But the next day, I got to know that he bought a leather purse for a female friend for the price of RM390.A little more than 10x worth from any one of the publisher's book.

I guess picture books are not worth buying to some.

Plainsong

Plainsong by Kent Haruf

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I like how Kent Haruf chaptered his book with names of the characters.

Plainsong tells a story about:

Ike and Bobby - struggling to understand why their mother left and be independent as their dad is working and leave the house in the morning after making them breakfast. They found friendship with an old lady who later went dead on them.

Guthrie - a lonely father who raises his sons (Ike and Bobby) on his own after his wife left him. His wife, Ella, is battling with mental depression. Not sure what drives her to depression. The book doesn't tell.

Victoria Roubideaux - a teenage who got herself pregnant out of wedlock. She confided in her school teacher, Maggie Jones and lived in her house when her mother chased her out of the house.

Mc Pherons - two good old brothers who took in and help Victoria after Maggie Jones senile father attacked her thinking that she broke into the house.

Overall, it was a great story, tells about life in a small town and how they connected and helped each other in times of troubles.

I was browsing YouTube for 80s songs when I came across Rick Astley's Together Forever. This song reminds me of my first bf, GB. I was not madly in love with him, but he was. And one day, out of the blue, he went to the DJ (where we worked) and requested him to play this song just for me. He had me at "If there's anything you need....". Well, I thought it would last forever as Rick Astley meant it but truth was, the friendship lasted 2 months. I was not ready for anything serious, so I let him drifted away.

Sticky situation and I almost cried

I was struggling to finish the 10 totebags order by Linda and yesterday, I spent my day and night just to peel the iron-on stickers!! Previously it was as easy as ABC, I iron them and peel. But yesterday was a hard struggle. The sticker wouldn't come out! Grrr. I think the iron-on papers are not in good condition unlike the previous ones I bought. They are from the same brand. Sigh.

I promised to deliver at 10am but only got to deliver by 11.30am. Lucky, sempat. I will never buy iron-ons from that place again!

On another note, I haven't been online today. Been cleaning my room, and the hall. My work corner was a mess! Not to mention my son's room and his bookshelf. He's not feeling well, been sick since morning, vomited 3 times at school, so I brought him to clinic. Let him rest and did not let him attend agama school.

Will resume work tomorrow. Gotta re-arangge my bookshelf now pula.

Suicide

Every time I passed by a building, it will remind me of S. S, just 16, committed suicide last month. she jumped off from the 7th floor of a building situated just in front of her house. She was a friend of my niece. My niece said she wrote on her facebook wall that she wanted to die. But as she was a very happy girl, nobody took her seriously. Of course that changes until she kept her words.

Looking at the building, my mind could not escape thinking of what had happened. Why she committed suicide? Family problem? Love problem? These questions keep repeating on my head. I sometimes saw the mother sitting on the porch looking at the building with sad eyes. I wanted to stop and talk to her, but I just couldn't. I don't have the courage; the courage to see a mother weeps for a daughter that she no longer has.

A good friend who has been spending quite a lot of $$$ on me came to my saviour. She has helped me a lot. I owed her a lot already but she believes in me. Just when I was down, she picked me up. Thank you Linda, you're such an angel.

Feeling a bit better

I have done a lot of thinking. Maybe I need to find a permanent job. But where to look?

Being without internet connection, I managed to get a lot done. Done Rose II painting. About to start Rose III. Started reading also. Have about 2 books that I bought last year that I haven't read yet; Plainsong and Sula. And another book that a friend gave to me few years ago; Life of Pi. 1/4 more to finish Plainsong.

Nowadays, I'm getting connection form free wi-fi available at mamak restaurants. Other than that, I managed to get consent from my brother to use his streamyx connection when he's at work.

I also get to sew again. Did some roll-up organisers and 2 totes. Will post it up on my littleshop soon. I did some simple monotone paintings on each of them.

But again, that is not enough to cover overdue bills.

Down in the dark hole

Encik suami dah komplen kata aku gemuk. Dia kata aku perlu kuruskan badan; bukan untuk dia sahaja tapi untuk aku juga. Apakah maksudnya itu? Hahaha.

Hmm...kena start balik diet yang terbengkalai. Nak diet bukannya senang. Dah tua-tua ni, lutut asyik sakit. The only senaman yang aku suka buat ialah lompat tali skipping. Tali skipping baru je jumpa tapi lutut pula buat hal.

Tapi tidak apa, aku jaga pemakanan dulu.

Esok nak ajak anak pergi bersiar-siar di Tasik Titiwangsa sambil mengeluarkan peluh.

Hari tu berat aku 75kg. Tapi terbengkalai sebab aku tensi dan stress dengan kerja. Kalau aku follow je the diet, sure dah turun sampai 60kg. Sekarang 73kg. Target weight 60kg. Bolehkah daku?

Sekarang aku terlalu berat, berat sehingga kedua lututku sakit. Berat yang seberat 73kg. Aku perlu hilangkan 13kg yang terlebih itu.

Hari ini aku makan sayur-sayuran sahaja tapi...

tapi AKU LAPAR!!!!

Tapi mengenangkan jeans aku yang dah tak muat itu, aku kuatkan hati dan semangat. Aku tahu aku boleh. Aku harus mengelakkan diri dari ancaman 'musuh' - roti canai, nasi lemak dan yang seangkatan dengannya.

Tahun ini adalah tahun yang amat bertuah bagi aku walaupun agak meletihkan. Benar kata orang, jika hendak berjaya, bukan dengan air liur semata tetapi dengan airmata dan juga keringat. Terkadang aku menangis sendirian kerana kerja-kerja yang berlonggokan. Sukar sekali bagi aku mengimbangi kerjaya dan rumah. Jika kau lewati lorong ini, lalu singgah dirumah usang ini, kau pasti tidak percaya keadaan aku disini. Rumah aku berselerak, sambil aku terjerit memarahi anak yang seorang tetapi kudratnya menyelerakkan rumah bagai sepuluh orang anak. Kucing aku terlalu gemar membuang air merata-rata dan aku akan terjerit lagi memarahi kucing sambil mengenggam alas kaki untuk dibasuh. Terkadang juga, masakan aku hangus gara-gara alpa menyiapkan kerja dihadapan komputer. Aku akan terjerit lagi kerana terkejut kuali ku sudah hitam! Bila aku alpa, aku hairan kenapa hidung aku juga begitu; tidak terbau apa yang mendatang didapur.

Terkadang. Terkadang. Terkadang. Oh! begitu banyak tugas yang harus aku lunaskan!

Jika kau lewati lorong ini, lalu kau jengah rumah usang aku, maafkan aku. Dedaunan kering belum aku sapu.

Bukan sekali. Juga bukan dua kali. Tidak juga tiga. Sebenarnya beribu kali. Telah beribu kali (atau beratus ribu? Aku hilang kiraan...) aku melihat betapa tidak prihatinannya ibubapa.

Aku cukup prihatin tentang hal ini: keselamatan anak-anak. Sepatutnya apabila berjalan di tepi jalanraya, ibubapa perlu memimpin anak-anak dibelah yang tidak bersebelahan dengan jalanraya. Maknanya ibubapalah yang berjalan bersebelahan jalanraya. Zaman sekarang, semua orang tergesa-gesa membawa kenderaan meskipun dikawasan perumahan atau dilorong-lorong yang sempit. Jadi, untuk keselamatan anak-anak, tolonglah, pimpin anak tu disebelah yang selamat. Fikirlah.

Lagi satu, aku nak bebel tentang ibubapa yang bawa anak naik motor. Anda bertopi keledar tetapi anak tidak. Kenapa? Tiada topi keledar bersaiz kanak-kanak? Atau harganya mahal, tidak mampu? Kalau tidak mampu, apa salahnya naik bas awam. Nyawa anak anda lebih mahal dari topi keledar. Fikirkanlah.

Kawinnya senyap-senyap dan semenjak kahwin dia tidak pernah pulang menjenguk ibunya yang saban hari menangis merindui anaknya.

Tadi aku kata nak hiatus, tak ada masa nak update blog yang ini. Tapi tiba-tiba sahaja aku terasa mahu.

Jam menunjukkan pukul 1.13 pagi dan aku masih disini, masih cuba mengagahi untuk menyelesaikan kerja-kerja melukis yang bertimbun. Dulu, inilah kerja yang paling aku nak buat dan aku berhenti kerja pejabat sebab nak melukis. Nah, bila dah dapat apa yang aku mahu, sampai tak terlukis!

Anyway, saja je aku nak membebel disini. Lagi, nama aku disalaheja. Dah puas aku bagi e-mel, kad nama dan macam-macam tapi nama aku dieja sebagai Emilia atau Amilia.

Susah sangat ke nak refer balik pada resume, portfolio atau kad nama aku tu?

Semalam tengok kisah Mathew Perry. Eh sebenarnya dah banyak kisah selebriti aku tengok. Erm, tapi aku tak ingat kisah siapa..hahahaha bapawk pelupenya koi ni!

Aku sebenarnya nak tulis hari-hari apa yang aku makan tapi manalah masa aku. Apapun, aku masih menggagahkan diri mengikut pemakanan seperti dibawah sana, selang dua entri. Kalau tukar pun, bab tomyam tu; aku ganti dengan sup sayur.

Berat aku dah hilang 2 kg, beb! Cepat run-forest-run Emila!

Oh pagi tadi, aku breakfast di San Francisco Cafe, Ampang Point. Makan Green Salad dan minum kopi! Nikmatnya! Dah lama tak minum kopi brew! Asyik minum kopi cap Tongkang je.

Baru je habis menokok-nambah elemen-elemen untuk buku My Mom's Garden. Sekarang aku tengah lukis siri Flower Guardians untuk penerbit. Aku kena lukis paling kurang 50 lukisan. Paling banyak 100. Ini tiket aku ke Italy! Pada masa sama aku kena tulis lagi dua buku kraf untuk PTS yang mana aku kena siapkan pada bulan Februari.

Dengan anak yang bersekolah dua sessi, dengan jadi driver menghantarnya pergi dan mengambilnya pulang, dengan menyediakan sarapan dan makan tengahari dia, dengan baju sekolah dia yang macam kerang tiap-tiap hari nak kena berus, dengan rutin diet aku, dengan kain baju kotor yang nak dibasuh, dengan kerja-kerja aku yang tak pernah habis, ....mampukah aku?

Aku cuba. Tahun lepas aku berazam tahun ni nak lepak sikit. Tapi nampaknya tahun ni aku kena berazam untuk tahun depan supaya dapat lepak banyak.

My bathroom scale tipped at 76kg.

I need to lose weight so I started dieting 2 days ago. My knees are hurting from my very heavy weight. With a height of 163cm, my BMI is 27.9 and it falls under the overweight category! I need to be at least 65kg for the BMI to be normal.

A sad beginning of a happy new year

We were so happy yesterday, he chased after us. He was so playful.

He was just a kitten. Mom brought him home from my cousin's house a week after our cat, Tiger went missing.

This afternoon, I accidentally hit him. I did not realised that he was under the car. I suspected he climbed on the tyre. I saw him died. I could not bare this feeling of sadness. Sure I was nagging yesterday coz I have to clean up after his litter and decided not to lock him up in his house so that he could go and litter naturally. But that was just nagging. My intention of him living like normal cat was shattered. I shattered it. I should've locked him up before getting into the car.

Yassin and me, we both were crying like crazy. It was a very bitter experience. He saw the cat died too.

Sis was hospitalised yesterday due to Bronchitis (Level 2).
Mom will reach home on the 15th.
I will undergo minor surgery on17th.

I wasn't feeling well and missed the HOPE charity dinner yesterday.
I feel a whole lot better today. Started to clear off some works. I really need a big break or a hiatus; for at least a week or two.

Mak, pakcik dan makcik aku dok tunggu surat tentang jadual penerbangan ke Mekah dari awal bulan lagi dan asyik telefon pejabat Tabung Haji. Selalunya jawapannya 'belum lagi, puan', 'tunggu surat ya', 'nanti kami maklumkan' dan sebagainya. Pagi tadi mereka dapat panggilan dari Tabung Haji mengatakan penerbangan mereka dijadualkan pada hari 1hb November 2009. Mak oii! 3 hari lagi?!!!

Ok, mungkin aku akan sibuk dua tiga hari ni nak uruskan kenduri doa selamat dan what-not.

Tangkap gambar rama-rama hinggap ditangan sendiri; rasanya seperti masuk bakul angkat sendiri. Payah nak adjust setting kamera tapi takpa bolehlah juga. Ada sekali tu rama-rama hinggap di LCD screen; nak tangkap gambar rama-rama tu guna suami aku punya LG Arena KM900 tapi bateri dah kong.
